There is a certain method to it, but it takes some time getting used to... something which I gave up doing after a few tries. 
My best was 2.9m. My last one I almost broke, but I overcompensated for a stride and wound up falling... backwards.
It was a funny "crunch!" sound that he made hitting his head on the track, though.

I managed to get 15.4 metres, but it wasn't proper running he sort of skipped on one knee throwing the opposite foot out a bit - it's just annoying.
