Bark at the Moon... (Rated R - Violence and Gore)

Post by SmokeMare »

Screams break the silence
Waking from the dead of night
Vengence is boiling
Hes returned to kill the light
Then when hes found who hes looking for
Listen in awe and youll hear him

Bark at the moon

Years spent in torment
Buried in a nameless grave
Now he has risen
Miracles would have to save
Those that this beast is looking for
Listen in awe and youll hear him

Bark at the moon

They cursed and buried him
Along with shame
And thought his timeless soul had gone
In empty burning hell--unholy one
But now hes returned to prove them wrong (oh no)

Howling in shadows
Living in a lunar spell
He finds his heaven
Spewing from the mouth of hell

And when he finds who hes looking for
Listen in awe and youll hear him
Bark at the moon.

Marco rolled over and smacked his alarm clock causing it to tumble onto the floor. The intricate guitar solo carried on, the musician frantically picking the lightning fast outro, despite the alarm clock being in pieces on his bedroom floor.

*Well folks, that was 'Bark at the Moon' by Ozzy Osbourne - before the drugs habit! And boy could he write songs back then... Anyway - coming up nex....*

***CRASH!***

Marco picked his now bleeding foot up and inspected the damage. Bits of shattered plastic jutted out at strange angles and blood was dripping onto the floor. He pulled the sharp bakelite shards out and licked his wounds clean. What a start to the day... That last joint the previous night had clearly been a mistake... A night of strange dreams, images of evil and carnage... And to wake up requiring a new alarm clock and a bandage...

He quickly got dressed, jeans, tee-shirt, sneakers, and darted downstairs. Not pausing, he jogged past the breakfast table, set out for cereal and milk, heading straight for the door... As usual his dad wasn't around... Around this time his dad always disappeared... Sometimes for days... Sometimes for a night... His mom didn't seem to mind though so...

"Marco, get back here and have some breakfast!"

"Sorry ma, I'm gonna be late!"

The next sound was the crashing of the door against the frame. The sun was shining brightly and he had to shield his eyes. His skin was itching feverishly as he crossed the yard to where his old crosser, motorcycle was leaning against the wall. It was rusty, difficult to start and probably unsafe, but it was his... And it beat walking.

After a turn of the key and a few kicks the rattly engine clanked into life, black smoke pouring from the back. He pulled his helmet on and jumped astride the old machine. Within a moment he was buzzing down the highway, dodging in between cars and eventually swerved off to take a short-cut down Chalmers Road, a desolate dirt track leading past the old ruined Greenfield industrial estate.

Jobs were scarce in Sommerville, they had been for some time. All the more important to get an education. Flying past the rotting buildings he soon swang back out onto the highway. He could see the school now, and it looked like he could be on time. He wanted to be early, he wanted to see Kirsten...

As the white faced building grew larger a black racing bike pulled up alongside him. The visor flipped open with one hand it's rider looked at Marco mockingly. It was Travis, his pale, gaunt features peeking out from the black helmet and visor, "You still haven't gotten rid of that piece of trash Marco?" Shaking his head he flipped his visor down and twisted his right hand. The bikes front wheel lifted off the floor and soon, bike and rider became tiny specks in the distance.

He didn't try to keep up, he'd tried it before and it had simply wrecked his bike. It felt humiliating, watching him sail past, but not as humiliating as pushing his bike into the school gates, pistons smoking and useless, then pushing it home past the sniggering kids who lived close enough to walk...

He bit his lip and watched the dark menace burn up the highway into the school gates.

Eventually he caught up, his rattling nail smoking heavily as he pulled into the school gates. He pulled into the area reserved for students with motorcycles and leaned his bike against the wall, the stand had long since dissapeared...

The sun was still hurting his eyes badly so he pulled out his tatty old sunglasses and pulled them onto his face, his matted long hair hanging over the edges...

As he was walking towards the main building he saw her, her petit frame standing amongst a group of similar looking girls. Her hair, a neat blonde bob and her haunting eyes... He watched her laugh, crsip white teeth gleaming in the sun... Her slender arms clutching her books tightly...

Gingerly he approached her... They'd been seeing each other for a little over a week now, a chat in the school canteen had been followed by a movie, a walk in the park together... Marco didn't care - he just enjoyed her company, her smile, her sense of humour...

"Hey!"

She turned from her friends and smiled at him, "Marco! How's it going?"

At this point Marco was rudely slammed to the floor. He hit the deck hard and looked up at his attacker, covering his eyes from the sun. He was just in time to avoid a vicious kick to the groin... It was Travis...

"I heard you were messing around with my girl punk! I didn't think you;d have the balls though! Yet here you are!"

Kirsten suddenly looked worried and started screaming at Travis, "Piss off Travis! You and I were never together anyway you deluded moron!"

Travis smiled at her, "Oh but we were going to be... I was sure of it...."

He looked different Marco mused, his skin seemed paler and his eyes had an unearthly look about them. Marco slowly climbed to his feet, "Nice move Travis, bet you always win when they don't see you comin'!"

***SMACK!***

Marco slid along the ground through the dust, blood trickling down his cheek from his mouth. He hadn't even seen it coming... The punch... It had contacted before he'd even seen him flinch...

Kirsten was screaming at Travis now - her friends had backed away though. The bell rang for first period and Travis smirked at the prone and stunned Marco, crumpled in the dust.

Kirsten knelt down beside him, "Hey are you okay? That jerk just wouldn't leave me alone... I didn't think it would come to this - I'm sorry..."

Marco wiped the blood fromhis cheek and looked at her concerned, "You're sorry? What do you mean you're sorry?"

She looked at him sheepishly, "Oh Marco, I didn't think he'd pick on you - I thought he'd back off... Anyway it might have started like that but... I really like you now!"

Marco rolled his eyes at her and climbed to his feet, "Sweet... So you've been using me... but now you've realised you really enjoy using me... Fantastic...."

"Marco it's not like that !"

"I'll see you later Kay, I've got to get to class!"

Marco had climbed to his feet and wandered into the school. It figured really, he'd always been a bit of an outcast and not very popular. Yet he'd ended up going out with Kirsten... He thought about Travis, he wanted to rip his head off...

People didn't mess with Travis though, or any of his cronies... Even the teachers seemed scared at times...

The morning passed uneventfully, he went to his lessons and paid as much attention as he could - while still going over things in his head. When the bell finally rang for lunch he was grateful.

He left his last morning lesson and grabbed a sandwich and a can of cola from the canteen. It was a pleasant day so he decided to sit out on the grass under one of the trees on campus. Once seated, he opened his pack of sandwiches and started to eat, watching the rest of school drift back and fourth into and out of the building. Before he'd finished his first round, Johnson saw him and started running. Johnson was probably one of the closest things to a friend he had in the school, an african american, member of the school boxing team and a person he liked to talk to.

"Hey man! I heard Travis hit you!?"

Marco shrugged, "Yeah, well... It's complicated... "

"And you're alright? They said you just got up and went to class?!"

"Well, duh? What was I supposed to do? Get back on my bike and go home for the day? I'm not gonna let that clown ruin my education!"

"Erm, Marco, in case you haven't heard people don't just get up and go to class when Travis has hit them - they generally go to hospital with concussion, a broken jaw or both... Don't you remember two weeks ago? When he hit Samson? His jaw is still wired up man, they won't let him go home!"

Marco rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "How does he do it? Going around hospitalizing people, and not getting arrested, expelled or what-not... "

Johnson shrugged, "Hey, I don't know... Friends in high places or something? You tell me!"

Marco took another bite out of his sandwich and started scratching his arms madly, they were itching lik crazy. "Hey I think somebody sort him out..." Johnson frowned,"Well don't look at me... And you're certainly not up to it!"

Marco sighed deeply, "Hmmm, you're right... Although, who's to say we have to take him on in a fight? We could play a practical joke on him? Sabotage his bike - that would get him!"

"You're crazy man, what if he got killed - you'd go down for murder..."

"Hmmm, true, bad idea - just thinking aloud.... How about something more innocent? Something a bit fun?"

"Marco, you're on you're own with this. Whatever you're cooking up in that screwed up mind of yours I don't even want to know about it... Just watch your back though - Travis is a complete nut."

Johnson smiled at him and the bell started ringing again. Marco wolfed down the rest of his sandwich and headed back to the school. One more lesson, then gym class.

When it came to gym class Marco wandered into the changing rooms and opened his locker. It was boxing practice at the moment, the inter-school boxing championship coming up. While he was putting his shorts and vest on he had a thought.

He noticed the lockers, all with little ventilation slits at the top... He knew which one Travis locker was and knew what he had to do. He put the thought to the back of his mind though - he had to prepare some things first.

As per usual he was last to get into the gym. He hated sports and particularly hated boxing, he'd never been much good at it. Coach O'Grady was standing by the ring impatiently when he entered, "Burns! Gym started ten minutes ago! Get your ass in that ring - you're sparring Freeman!"

Freeman... Great... The captain of the school boxing team, six foot seven and about four feet wide... He'd never be in the same weight category as him... So what was the point? He thought about arguing it with the coach, but thought better of it - he had a feeling it was the coaches way of punishing him for having such a distaste for what the coach loved - sport.

After climbing into the ring he pulled his head guard on and sorted his gloves out. Alec Freeman for grinning at him, and as soon as he'd gloved up Freeman was skipping closer, bobbing left and right as he did. Marco raised his guard and started moving around the ring. Freeman edged closer and threw a few light jabs, just testing his guard. Marco edged back and skipped around. Then Freeman threw another jab.

***SLAM!***

Freeman's hook had caught him square on the temple, and he rocked sideways with the impact. As his guard sagged a couple jabs landed square on his nose, then...

***SLAM!***

Another right hook, causing him to step sideways. Freeman appeared to surprised he was still standing more than anything at this point. The coach started screaming instructions at them, "Freeman you wuss, stop tapping him and hit him HARD! Burns, start fighting back! I didn't put you in there to be his punching bag!"

Freeman was getting frustrated at this comment, he started moving and bobbing more, a few jabs, then a break... Another jab then..

***WHACK!***

An uppercut slipped under Marco's guard and lifted him off his feet. This time he felt it too, instead of his usual reaction of allowing himself to fall down though he felt himself getting angry. A burning hatred started to flare up. He never usually cared... Maybe it was the punishing he'd taken from Travis that morning, Kirsten using him? He wasn't sure but he was starting to feel really aggressive...

Freeman stunned that he'd taken the uppercut started jabbing again, Marco let him jab, he watched the for flinch, looking him sqaure in the eyes then...

The flinch, the look before the swing... Marco ducked low under the hook and rose after it, then slammed his fist as hard as he could into the side of Freeman's head. The force of the blow lifted Freeman off his feet and threw him sliding across the floor of the ring, then tumbling under the ropes onto the gym floor. He was spark out cold.

Marco smiled to himself, he felt good... He felt like he'd like to do that to Travis.

Meanwhile the coach had rushed over to Freeman, "Wake up you pussy!" After a few moments he came around and looked in awe at the previously completely unathletic Marco Burns standing int he ring smiling. The coach grabbed his shoulders, "You alright son? You're going to miss the first round now... Dammit... Six weeks no training, no competing for you..."

Freeman muttered under his breath, "How the freakin' hell did he do that?"

The coach had already got up, clearly impressed at Marco's show, he looked up to the ring, "Son, you want to try out for the team? The captains going to miss the first round now you've knocked him out... And I need some hard hitters on the team!"

Marco shrugged, he'd enjoyed the new found feeling of adrenaline and satisfaction at flooring his opponent... Besides it couldn't hurt to train just in case Travis came after his blood again, and he was likely to if he found out what Marco was planning to do...

The rest of the gym class got better and better. Several non-team boxers, good boxers, but not on the team climbed into the ring. Marco dodged and bobbed, jabbed and hooked... Nobody was able to lay a single good clean blow on him, yet he knocked every one to the mat...

After the class the coach was clearly pleased and promised him a place in the team. After showering he was drying off and getting changed, when Johnson strolled up to him, his towel around his waist, "Marco, I hear you're on the team! I'm not surprised after that display I have to say... What the hell happened to you're 'I don't do sport, sport is for morons - no offence.' policy?"

Marco shrugged and pulled his sweater on, "I dunno, something clicked today... Maybe it was that incident with Travis and Kirsten this morning..."

The rest of the day passed relatively without incident. He had a couple of papers he needed to finish though, both of which required some research so he spent a couple of hours in the library after school. By the time he left, he was the last to leave.

Packing his books into his bag, he exited the library to find the school deserted. It was nearly dusk, the sun was low in the sky, casting a soft, golden glow over the landscape. He scurried towards where his bike was parked, it was far too quiet...

Marco wasn't sure why, but he felt like he was being watched from somewhere. The hairs on the back of his neck were standing on end and he felt a shiver run up his spine. He looked around him frantically as he rushed towards his bike, but not a soul was to be seen. Even the road was silent, nothing was stirring, but still he felt he was being watched... He was supposed to have been seeing Kirsten that night, but he figured that was out of the question now... He wasn't even sure he wanted to...

Once he'd made it to his bike he pulled it away from the wall and wheeled it into some space. The tension had grown somehow, and inexplicably he felt like he was in danger. He glanced around, peering into the shadows... Nothing...

Desperately he started kicking his bike... Nothing... He checked the ignition, kicked it agaim... Nothing... Frantically he behan kicking and kicking, twisting the throttle every time... Each time it just spluttered and coughed...

'Choke, choke - try a bit of choke!'

He pressed the choke lever down and kicked the starter - this time it grumbled into life and he let it tick over for a few seconds... Breathing a sigh of relief he released the choke and tried to pull away, but immedietly the engine died...

Racking his brains for what might be wrong he suddenly thought - he hadn't put gas in it for a long time... He looked at his fuel valve, it was on main tank - so he twisted it one eighty degrees to reserve tank. Then kicked it again....

Thankfully the ancient engine clattered into life and stayed in. He pulled his helmet on and and released the clutch. As the bike lurched towards the school gates he thought he heard a flapping noise over head, or a fluttering, some hidden terror in the sky peering down at him...

He twisted the throttle hard and notched up a gear, by now the light was growing dimmer.

Screaming down the highway he swung into Chalmers Road the dirt track alongside the industrial estate. As he did though - he wished he hadn't... It was so silent and still, the only sound the rattling hum of his near broken engine. Every now and then he thought he caught pairs of eyes, peering at him from the abandonded buildings. Notching up gears he twisted his throttle hard, soon he cannoning down the dirt track, much faster than was safe to do so. He rode as fast as he could go, he felt like the devil himself was snapping at his heels. The abandoned industrial buildings became a blur, flying past at a frightening rate,, he leaned in on the corner back towards the main road and...

*** BANG!***

Marco was sent sailing through the air and sliding through the dust. His bike carreered out of control and slid onto it's side. He picked himself up and scanned the buildings, he was sure he could see eyes, just beyond his vision... Getting closer...

Marco sprinted towards his downed motorcycle and dragged it upright, the engine was still running so he leapt on, dropped the clutch and let fly. Soon he was back on the main road, his home came into view and he swang into the gate, rested his bike on the wall and rushed through the door.

The house was silent, most of the lights were out. His mom was sitting silently in the kitchen, she had a bottle of whisky on the table and an empty glass next to it.

"Mom? What's the matter? Where's dad?"

Marco had retired to his room, feeling confused and frustrated. His father had been disappearing for years, he was usually back by this point though. He'd dissapear for a night or two, then re-appear as if nothing had happened. His mom seemed to totally ignore it, he knew she knew what was going on, but as per usual she had been totally secretive about it.

She wasn't drunk, she was usually tee total, the fact that she'd elected to have a shot indicated to him that she must be worried about something. He'd tried to get it out of her - gain as usual, but no joy. In the end he stopped mulling it over in his mind and retreated to his room.

He fired up his PC and spend the night surfing the net and chatting on forums and chatrooms, broken up only by a pause to have a quiet secret joint out of the window.

By midnight he was fast asleep. It wasn't a comforting sleep though, he had strange dreams, about running through forests, on all fours. AS the dream progressed it soon became night time and he was shrouded in darkness. The sounds of the forest started to get to him and ran faster... Faster... Then he sat bolt upright in his room, pouring with sweat, he stared in horror... It was Travis standing at the foot of his bed, but his eyes were glowing yellow, and the room was icy cold - so much that frost had formed on his walls and furniture...

He opened his mouth to scream, then sat up in bed confused... Travis was not there... The room was the normal temperature, but he was sweating and his skin was itching. He pondered on whether his last lot of cannabis had been laced with LSD or something, such were the bizarre dreams he'd been having...

Curling up tight in his duvet he tried to get back to sleep, desperately avoiding thinking about things that had been troubling him this day.

When he awoke, he mother had left the house, she'd left him breakfast out as usual, but again he didn't feel inclined to eat it. It was strange, his mom leaving the house early - it had to be to do with his dad...

His alarm broken he realised he'd slept in, it suited him though, he'd wanted to avoid the first lesson anyway. Thinking about his plans from the previous day he opened the garage, and started rumaging amongst the building supplies and diy stuff that his dad left strewn about. He sound found what he was looking for, six large cans of expanding foam. The sort of material used to fill cavities, you sprayed the foam in then waited and it would expand and go hard.

Tucking them into his backpack he left the house, clambered on his bike and sped off. He thought about giving Chalmers road a miss this time, remembering the fear he'd felt the previous night, after some soul searching though, he convinced himself it was down to him being silly and nothing more. It didn't feel much better in the day though, eerily silent and desolate he slowed down a little and concentrated hard. Soon he was through and rolling into the school gates.

It was very quiet in the school, everyone was in lessons - perfect. He rushed straight to the gym and found Travis's locker. Carefully pushing the nozzles of the cans between the ventilation slits at the top he emptied the caisters one by one into the locker, then deposited the cans in a nearby rubbish bin... He had to be there to see it...

Leaving hastily he darted to his first lesson, English. After apologising for his lateness, stating that his bike hadn't started - which was totally believable, settled down into the lesson. It was a two hour lesson, and halfway through the second lesson he felt a shiver run up his spine... It was difficult to explain, he was supposed to be writing a short essay, but he coudldn't concentrate...

He could feel the the probing question, in his mind... Travis's voice, screaming in his mind ,'Who the freakin' hell has done this?!'

He shuddered and pushed it to the back of his mind trying not to think about what he'd done and concentrating on his essay.

The morning went slowly, all the time, Marco's thoughts about the events of the last forty eight hours had been rushing back and fourth through his head. Was he imagining things? It seemed most likely - his rational mind was insisting constantly that he was being foolish and that he should pull himself together.

As per usual he picked himself a sandwich up from the canteen, and went to sit in on the grass, as again it was a nice day. He saw Johnson leaving the school building again, this time he made a bee-line for Marco.

"Hey, how's it going?"

Marco smirked and shrugged, "Okay I guess... How about you?"

Johnson shook his head, smiling, "It was you wasn't it?"

"Mwah!? And what am I supposed to have done?"

"Let's just say I saw Travis open his locker a while ago... He didn't seem to like what he saw though... The whole thing solid with hard plastic foam, his sports kit, his books, his stuff... He's going to have been digging it out for ages! I just hope he doesn't figure out who it was!"

"He goes throwing his weight around so much... How many people has he pissed off? It's about time he got some come uppance!"

Johnson smirked, "Hey, it's your funeral... Nobody laughed - that was the wierd thing... They just stood there... Watching silently... And he was like, staring at everyone one by one as if he was reading their damn minds or something?!"

"Jesus..."

Johnson frowned, "Uh, oh... I'm outa here - good luck buddy!"

Marco felt an iron grip on his shoulder, it was a cold pale hand, but it felt like steel encasing his shoulder. He turned slowly, it was Travis, but bizarrely he didn't seem pissed...

"Burns, Kirsten told me about you... Just to let you know there's no hard feelings?"

His voice echo'd faux niceness, the grip on Marco's shoulder was intense, it felt like a vice, tightened to the maximum. Strangely though Marco didn't feel a great deal of pain... He nodded up to him, "Sure Travis... Whatever..."

The pale gaunt face looked confused and a little frustrated at this... He spoke again, but his voice took on a wierd tone, with almost hypnotic rythym... "Give me fifty dollars." Marco scrunched his face up, "Say what? What for?"

Travis was looking more and more frustrated, he glared at Marco, and Marco felt the probing questions about the locker again, pricking, trying to find a way in to his mind...

Eventually Travis released his grip and stood up straight, "That was a nice stunt you pulled on that bike last night... We were just going to wander over and help you... But you rode off in such a hurry! Next time?"

We? Who did he mean by we? The question was burning in Marco's head all afternoon, the best conclusion he could come to was he meant his drop-out cronies at the school. A bunch of simpering fools who pandered around Travis, copying his pale complexion and fetish for black cothes. He wasn't particularly afraid of them of course... Although the worrying thing is there had grown to be quite alot of them. It was a huge school with a massive campus and over the years Travis's 'gang' had grown exponentially year by year. IT was strange as well, seemingly rational people suddenly electing to become his minions. It had happened to people he knew too, Lucinda a girl he'd been fond of a couple of years back. One day they were best friends, Travis took an interest in her and almost overnight she stopped speaking to him.

The afternoon's lessons drew on, he was finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate. Eventually the final bell rang and he breathed a sigh of relief, after the previous night's experience he decided to head straight home this time. After leaving the main building he headed to his bike, kids were still hanging about, milling around and generally loitering... But there was Kirsten standing near his bike looking nervous. He decided he'd had enough of her crap and wouldn't speak to her. As he approached though, she addressed him, "Marco!"

He pulled his sun glasses out and put them on, more as a gesture of purposeful rudeness rather than requirement. "Yeah?"

Something was wrong, he could tell, she seemed really scared, "Marco, I told Travis I was just going out with you to put him off... I didn't mean it though - I like you... I... I was just worried..."

Her look, her sullen eyes... She looked haunted, and a little broken. "Hmmm, well, thank's I think... I'm not afriad of that punk though..."

She glared at him, "Then you don't know what you're dealing with! He's wierd, he can mess with your head..." Marco chuckled softly, "Hah! He tried that on my today I think, it was lame, I just ignored him and he just stood there looking baffled... He puts out this pathetic image of being some big mysterious super villain, sure he can throw punch but so what?"

Kirsten shuddered at Marco's comments, "I think you're underestimating him... Marco are we still friends?"

Marco looked at her sympathetically, she seemed genuine, but he couldn't forgive and forget easily. "Ask me tomorrow - let me sleep on it..."

Before she could reply he pulled his helmet on and grabbed his bike, then jumped on. "Marco! Don't do this! I need you!"

He threw his head back and laughed, "Fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice shame on me! If you're still serious about it tomorrow we'll talk!"

He kicked his bike, the rattling engine bursting into life drowned out her pleading cry, her request for him to stay with her that night...

Disappearing in a cloud of dust he didn't look back. He didn't take Chalmers road, he took the long route. When he arrived back at the house his mom was in, she looked deadly concerned though. He knew something was serious as he walked through the door, "Where's dad mom?"

She shuddered at the question, "Marco, your father has to do something every now and then. He has to go away for a few days, he'd never been away this long though... He'll be back, you'll see."

"Where mom? Where does he go? What does he do?"

She looked at him shiftily, "He made me promise not to tell you... There are things about your father that would tear your world apart!"

Marco frowned at her, "Like my world isn't torn apart already!"

The conversation went on with futility, he simply could not get her to budge and tell him the truth. His remaining night echo'd that of the previous, a bit of coursework, a bit of internet and another joint out of the window.

He awoke again in the night, he'd been having the same animalistic dreams as before, then he woke in agony. His muscles contracting, his veins popping out. He tried to scream, but his mouth felt wrong, he couldn't make the noise the way he was supposed to. Writhing on the bed, tears began streaming from his eyes, he tried to straighten his legs out but pain shot up his spine, his skin began to feel like it was bubbling and writhing.

Pouring with sweat, Marco rolled back and fourth panting with heat and pain, he held up his hand and looked at it in the pale moonlight, veins were popping up, his skin had become darker and tine hairs appeared to be fighting through, his fingers had somehow morphed into talon like claws...

He cried out on pain and sat bolt upright in bed, it was morning. He looked at the bed covers and they were messed up, a few loose hais were strewn about, and every joint and muscle ached badly.

Fighting his way to his feet he pulled some clothes on, then staggered downstairs and out the door. He noticed on his way, his mom had been out again... It was totally unheard of... He wondered where she'd gone... And why he felt like he'd ran a marathon....

He avoided Chalmers Road again. He didn't so much fear an ambush by Travis, he just didn't get involved in some tit for tat struggle. The main roads were more hazardous, but he felt less on edge dodging cars and trucks - than buzzing down that deserted track...

When he arrived at school he remembered the conversation he'd had with Kirsten the previous night. He knew he'd been hard on her, maybe he should try and make it up today.

After cruising through the school gates he parked his bike up. He was early this morning and decided to search for Kirsten. She'd be on the way to the science block, so he headed that way. He found her soon enough, but he was rather surprised when he did. She was walking with Lucinda, who she'd never really spoken to much before. Travis gang tended not to socialise with those outside Travis gang... Especially not Kirsten. Jogging to catch up he darted in front of them and turned ot confront them, "Kirsten! Hey, can we talk?"

Lucinda scowled at him, full of hatred and spoke before Kirsten could, "Push off freak! She doesn't want to talk to you!"

Marco eyed Kirsten who appeared to shivering in fear, something about her had changed... Why was she wearing the polo-neck sweater? Marco rubbed his chin and looked Kirsten straight in the eye, "You don't want to talk to me? And what's with the polo-neck? It's the middle of summer!"

Lucinda glared at Kirsten now, with threatening eyes. Marco stepped in between them, "And what's your problem Luce? We used to be friends? Till you went all wierd on me that is?! Why don't you scuttle off and let me talk to Kirsten for a bit?" He feigned a smile, but Lucinda was having none of it. "Listen up freakshow, Travis says she's not to talk to you!"

"Is that right? Well, I don't give a crap what Travis says, he can go jump off a bridge for all I care!"

She glared at him, then swung a fist square at his jaw, instinctively Marco reached up and grapped the fist in mid-swing. Astonished at his own reactions he held it tightly, "Nice girls don't fight!" There was a different tone to his voice, a low growl almost... When he pushed the fist away, Luce went tumbling to the floor rolling along the concrete path. She looked up at him, stunned that he'd over-powered her so easily, "Travis will hear about this Burns! He'll come for you later... He'll rip your freakin' head off!"

Marco glared back, "He's welcome to try... Any time, any place... He can bring his pathetic gimps as well if he so chooses - so he's got someone to carry him home!"

Luce chuckled at this, "You really don't know what you're dealing with do you? I'll look forward to watching Travis destroy you utterly!"

By this point Marco noticed Kirsten had left, so he turned his back on Luce and sprinted after her. He caught up soon enough, she was grateful to see him. "Oh Marco thanks..." He looked more closely at her now, her skin was grey and tired looking and her eyes were a little bloodshot, her lips were dry and cracked... She looked positively ill...

"What the hell happened to you Kirst?"

She hung her head low, staring at the ground and uttered in a low, almost silent whisper, "He got me..."

"Travis? What did that punk do? Did he rape you?"

"No... Worse... You wouldn't believe me if I told you..."

Thoughts were racing through his head - what could be worse than rape?

"Tell me..."

She stepped a little closer, and pulled her polo-neck down a little, "Look..."

Marco peered at her neck, there were two tiny bullet hole marks with heavy bruising around them, they hadn't healed well...

"What the... What are they?"

"Marco... Travis... He's not human... He's a vampire..."

Vampire... It sounded ridiculous...

"What?! There's no such thing as Vampires!"

"Travis is a powerful Vampire... I was leaving school last night, then I don't remember... I woke up in an old warehouse on the Greenfield... Travis and a dozen of his cronies were there... He told me, I'm now half-vampire... I have two choices, I either feed, becoming a full vampire, but also his slave... Or don't and die within a few days, a few weeks at most...I can;t face it though! I won't drink blood!"

She began crying, so he held her close and let her cry on his shoulder. He still didn't know what to believe. She seemed convinced it was true... And she looked so ill... He felt he had to try to help her one way or the other, but how?

"Look, we'll sort this out, I have an idea who we can ask about this sort of stuff... Miri, she's knows all about the occult - we can skip lessons, I'll take you back to my house - then I'll find her and speak to her? How does that sound?"

Kirsten started sobbing again so he led her back to his bike. People were herding into their lessons now so they were able to jump on the bike and disappear unnoticed.

Kody watched as the man and the girl sped off on the dirt bike, pushing his long brown hair out of his eyes he sniffed the air again. There was no way that he could have missed this; that smell, it was so familiar.

All this time there was another under his nose, he cursed himself for not noticing sooner. As he looked back and forth from his spot on the school building wall, he slowly walked across the parking lot and jumped into his Black 67' Charger and took off down the road in the direction the man on the bike had taken.

Every so often he pulled his car to the side and stepped out, taking a long sniff of the air, he was getting closer. Soon he would find out if he was right, soon he would find out if there is another.

Due to the sense of urgency Marco had taken Chalmers Road. Kirsten seemed really shook up. Thankfully his mom was out again, so he got her a drink and took her to his room. He had to find Miri, he knew where she'd most likely be - the library. Once he was certain Kirsten was okay he rushed back outside and leapt onto his bike. In seconds he tearing off down the highway at full pelt.

He took Chalmers Road again, he didn't notice anything eerie about it this time, but it was still morning... He swung out back onto the highway at the other side. He spotted what looked like an older student standing on the side of the road by his car...

*** GRRRR !!! ***

Marco wobbled on his bike almost losing control... The growl - it felt like it had come from in side his own head, but somehow triggered. He'd lost it so badly his front wheel was swerving left and right and he couldn't straighten up, he flew past the black car, onto the dust and braked, while jamming his heel onto the ground. The bike slowed and turned sideways, then skidded to the ground, Marco tumbling after it...

Kody watched without emotion as the man crashed his bike and flew over the handlebars. Kody merely brushed the kicked up dirt off his black coat and walked towards the fallen man.

"You ok?" he said in gruffy voice, "that was quite a crash."

He then spied something different about this man, he seemed jumpy. Then he caught a whiff of that familiar smell. Kody moved in closer as he helped the man up off the ground, "Do we know each other?" he said with a hint of question in his voice, "My name is Kody, and for some odd reason I feel something familiar about you."

Kody's senses were going wild when this man was around, could there be another like him? Kody knew of Travis and his horde of mindless minions, but another one like him? How could he have not known of this until now?

Shaking the questions aside, he stared into the man's eyes; "So who are you?"

The impact had knocked Marco for six, he'd slid painfully through the dirt and his bike had conked out. Before he could pick himself up though, the guy standing at the side of the road had approached him,

"You ok? That was quite a crash."

"Do we know each other? My name is Kody, and for some odd reason I feel something familiar about you. So who are you?"

Marco's senses were overloaded. He felt a tingle up his spine, and he felt unaturally aware for some reason. Slowly he pulled himself up of the ground, and faced the stranger. His gaze was intense and it exacerbated the strange feelings he was experiencing. He had to acknowledge his concern though, putting aside his fears of being able to help Kirsten in time,

"Yeah, thanks... I'm okay... for some reason I seem to be impervious to pain lately - not sure why... Too much drugs?"

He pulled his helmet off and placed it carefully on the floor, "I'm sorry, don't think we've met... I'm Marco Burns..."

He thought about Travis as he was talking, there was something about this Kody... But he didn't have the pale, gaunt look, and blood-shot eyes of the Travis'ites whether they were Vampires or just goths... This guy seemd different...

"Marco, huh? Good to meet you." Kody said as he shook the man's hand.

"I overheard your conversation back at school, been having trouble with Travis and his minions have you?"

He looked the man up and down once more, Kody's green eyes flickering up and down. "Yes, you sure don't seem like one of them..."

Marco eyed him suspiciously, he spoke with the air of someone who knew... Gently he released his hand and frowned at him, "Travis? What do you know about Travis?"

The atmosphere was tense, not hostile, but tense. Marco felt somehow he could learn something from this guy - but at the same time the seconds were ticking by and he had to find Miri... Kirsten was counting on him.

Kody eyed Marco suspiciously, "He's a vamp. Him and all his cronies."

"I figured you would know that, I mean I recognize that smell on you anywhere. You're like me."

Kody then rolled up his sleeve to show a large bite mark across his forearm, "Do you have any idea of what I'm talking about?"

Marco smirked at this, two people thinking Travis was a vamp! Could it be true?

He looked at the savage bite mark on Kody's arm. It appeared to have healed but it looked bad... He had seen one before too, very similar anyway, "Hmmph, not sure what you're talking about bud... I have seen a bite mark similar to that though - my gramps had one just like it... He erm, never talked about it though... Why? What exactly do you mean by 'like me' ?"

Kody finally cracked a smile showing off his canine teeth that were changed into fangs long ago. "Grandfather huh? I guess you must have a lineage going."

He then rolled down his sleeve, "I got mine years ago."

He then returned to Marco's question, "Let me put it this way, have you noticed anything strange lately? Any nights you can't remember where you were? Any strange hair growth?"

"Marco," he said before pausing for an effect, "I'm a werewolf."

"Just like you are."

Marco was gobsmacked at this statement. It was even more reality shattering than the idea that Travis was a vampire. At the same time despte how ridiculous it sounded... It sort of made sense... Maybe that was why his dad always disappeared for a few nights once a months? Had his parents thought it might have given him a miss? Thoughts were racing through his head trying to contemplate the insane change to his personal reality.

He couldn't handle it... He felt he could only deny it, "Woah... Reality check here... One minute Travis is a Vampire... I thought he was just a moron personally, but now two people have told me he'd a Vampire... Now I'm a werewolf!? Is this all some sort of practical joke?! What the freakin' hell is goin' on!?"

Kody's short temper was beginning to rear its ugly head, "No it's not a god damn joke."

"Listen, kid. Travis and his moron cronies have been after my ass for years. Either you can help me fight back or you can wait until that bastard gets you or the ones you love."

Just then Kody felt a small twinge in Marco's emotion, "Or has he already?"

Kody was clearly serious... But Marco simply wasn't ready to accept that he could be a werewolf... Time was ticking by, and he felt desperate to get on with sorting this mess out.

"Look Kody, I'm sorry... Okay, let's say I accept Travis is a Vampire, and you are a werewolf and he's after you... I'm pretty sure I'm not though... Surely I'd know? If you must know a.. ahem... friend of mine has had a problem with Travis and I need to find out if there's a way I can help her. I don't know if there is or not - but I know a girl who might. If Travis IS a Vampire then I'm worried that he's trying to recruit the whole school... Haven't you noticed how they seem to be increasing in numbers? If there's a way we can stop him - we should... I don't know how I could help though..."

He looked Kody in the eye, Kody didn't seem impressed. He felt pleased he'd found a possible ally, but worried about where this was going... His dad missing for several days, Kirsten saying she'd been bitten by a Vampire, now Kody claiming not only that he was a werewolf but that Marco was aswell...

It had been bombshell after bombshell the last few days.

"Look, I really need to get to school... I have to find someone - can we meet up later? Lunchtime?"

Kody shrugged, "Fine."

"I'll be in the lunchroom around 12 or 12:30," he then picked up Marco's helmet and handed it back to him.

With a small smirk he laughed, "Try to not crash next time."

Kody then turned and got into his own car and took off down the street towards the school. Kody rarely showed up for class on time but his teachers didn't mind, in fact they had seemed to given up on most kids in the school. It was beacuse of Travis and his gang of "vamps" sucking the life out of the school; in that moment Kody laughed to himself at the pun he made by accident. However, the sad reality was that day after day Travis' ranks grew while Kody was one of the few remainging werewolfs left in the area.

He pulled his car into an empty parking spot and headed towards the school building. It seemed so long ago that Kody and his best friend Chris had first started school innocently enough; however it wasn't long until Travis took Chris away from Kody and changed everything. The night it happened Kody barely escaped a group of Travis' cronies but when he lost them he was cornered by a strange looking wolf who bit his arm and began the change.

That was four years ago, now Chris was one of the higher-ups in Travis' group and he and Kody had been at odds ever since. Luckily no one dared attack him during the day knowing that many of the "newbies" didn't get their strength until night time when Kody could call on his power whenever he chose.

For now, however, Kody made his way thought the partially empty school building and into his class where he simply nodded to the teacher as he walked in and took his seat. He looked at the clock which read 11:30, "That kid better be there at 12:00."

Screaming down the highway, Marco was aware that Travis would be informed of his actions earlier in the day. To this end he didn't park his bike in the usual place, he parked it behind the school hidden amongst some bushes. It also occured to him that Travis would have informed his minions to look out for him and probably challenge him, so he scaled the fence near the sports clubhouse and sneaked in avoiding the main paths.

His goal was the library, an old and foreboding building, not near the main halls. Luckily nobody was around and he was able to approach seemingly without being seen. Once inside he nodded to the librarian and headed for the stairs, Miri would be here somewhere, he strolled up the stairs and around the gallery looking between the bookshelves. Eventually he spotted Miri sitting quietly at a desk, with several ancient books open and a pad, on which she was making notes. He approached her and sat opposite her;

"Miriam, hi..."

She looked up and smiled at him, then removed her glasses, "Marco, what brings YOU here?"

He shifted uneasily in his seat, she had an air of knowledge and understanding, but what he had to say to her seemed utterly insane;

"Miri, I need your help... The stuff I need to ask you about though... It's going to sound whacko... Totally whacko!"

She chuckled softly at this then leaned closer, "Marco, you have nothing to lose, I've thought you were whacko from the moment we met... Now what's on your mind?"

"Hmmm, Travis, do you know Travis?"

She nodded softly, "Yes of course, who doesn't?"

"Do you know what he is?"

"An idiot? An egomaniac? A waste of space?"

Marco leaned closer, their faces almost meeting over the slim reading table, "Miri, he's a Vampire..."

Miriam frowned, "Interesting... Are you taking any medication? You should be!"

Marco groaned, "I know it sounds stupid, I thought the same, but several people have told me the same, he's like some sort of head vampire and all the goths in the school are like his minions or something... Oh and I met a guy who said he was a werewolf, and apparently I'm one too... But I don't think he was right about that..."

Miri sighed deeply, "Marco, you could just be the victim of an elaborate wind-up, reliable accounts of vampires and werewolfs haven't been given for hundreds of years - they are probably extinct... Hmmm, it would be interesting if what you're saying is true though... Can I tell your fortune?"

That was the mark, the point at which Marco felt he'd made a good decision, Miri was reputed to have an interest in the occult, he didn't believe in fortune telling, but he decided to humor her.

"Sure, if it makes you happy... What do you want to do?"

"Hmmm, a few things I think... If what you're saying is true it's going to be unusual... Hang on a sec..."

She reached under the table and into her bag, then produced an ancient looking box of Tarot cards. She shuffled them, twisted the pack, then shuffled some more. Once satisfied she muttered something like a whispered prayer under her breath and fanned the cards out...

"Pick one..."

He reached non-chalantly towards the cards and drew one fourth, and placed it on the table, "And another..."

He grabbed another and placed it by the first. This process continued for a few moments, until she pulled the cards away and laid the ones he'd picked out in an intricate pattern. Slowly turning the cards over she became more and more stunned by what she saw, he'd picked almost all trump cards, with the few that remained being face cards or eights... An upside down death, an upside down devil, the hanged man, the fool, the tower, the wheel of fortune and an the queen of swords at the centre.

Miri studied the pattern, then ran her eyes over it again, screwing her face up more and more each time... After ages she pulled a small book out of her bag and flicked back and fourth through it checking the cards and muttering to herself...

"Well, that's the wierdest readig I've ever done... None of this makes sense... If it's right though there IS something very occult about you, or possibly your future, maybe both... I can't interpret this... Let me see your hand instead."

He casually offered his palm and she grabbed it and started peering closely at it, then she turned the hand over and looked at the back, then felt his hands and fingers, sighing and muttering as she did so... Eventually she stopped, but continued holding his hand, "Well, I think you MIGHT be a werewolf Marco, even if you don't know it..."

Marco grinned, it seemed funny to hear another person tell him this, "Oh really? And what tells you that? My life line or something?" She smiled cheekily at him, "No - this does... Look." Turning his hand over she pointed to his fingernails, there were strange marks he hadn't noticed before under the skin behind the nails... There were also strange stretch marks in wierd places on his hands, "I think you've changed before but not remembered it... Look these look like claws, maybe when you change partially they grow and stick out? These marks where you're skin appears to have stretched too - that looks quite severe and it matches on both hands... Hmmm, one more test... Wait a sec."

This time she reached into her pocket with her other hand and pulled out a lock-knife. After opening the blade she nipped a little cut in the tip of one of Marco's fingers allowing it to drip onto the table. Then she took off her silver bracelet and used the knife to shave fine particles of silver into the droplet of blood. At first nothing happened, then it fizzed a little, then turned a grey-ish blue colour and started to smell bad...

Miri looked at him, and put her glasses back on, "Okay so you're a werewolf, let's say Travis is a Vampire? What do you propose to do about it?"

Marco sucked his finger, the blood soon disappearing, "He's got someone I like, turned them half vampire - I want to know if there's a way I can reverse it, get her mortal again. If I don't she'll either die, or feed and become one of his slaves..."

Miri nodded methodically, clearly taking it all in and thinking about it, "Hmmm, intense... Tell you what, I'm on good terms with the librarian, I can get access to some freakin' serious books here... Give me the afternoon and I'll see what I can find out... Meet me here after school?"

Marco nodded and stood up, "Thanks Miri, I'll try... If I think I'm being followed I'll have to leave it though... I think they are on to me and I don't want to endanger you."

She shrugged, "Hey, I'm glad you asked... Much more interesting research than my history assignment - see you after school."

Marco glanced at the clock, it was nearly twelve and he'd promised to meet Kody. He left the library and ran to the canteen, if he could get there before the classes finished it would be better. He didn't want to be confronted by a gang of Travis goons.

Kody sat at an empty table in the lunchroom eating a hearty portion of chicken, the grease smeared on his cheeks and around his mouth causing a few students to laugh to themselves. Kody looked up to see a few sophmores giggling amongst themselves, he let out a low growl that caused the kids to stop laughing and quickly turn back to their table.

Wiping his face, Kody looked up to see Marco walk through the doors to the lunch room. Kody gave him a slight nod and pushed the chair out on the other side of the table. When Marco sat down he broke the silence, "Find what you're looking for?"

Marco slid quickly into a seat opposite, "I think so... And hey, now two people have told me I might be a werewolf... Even if I have no knowledge of it... I don't suppose you know anything about half-vampires?"

As he asked he noticed the look on Kody's face, he was about to turn when an icy grip clamped onto his shoulder, like a vice...

"Marco Burns... Fancy seeing you here, skipping classes today? That's bad for your education! And don't worry, I'm not angry at you for taking Kirsten away - what's done is done and can't be reversed."

The army of goths standing behind Travis were smirking and chuckling at this. Marco could feel his anger growing, but he didn't want to fight Travis, there seemed something imovable about him.

Marco wondered what Travis knew, probably what Luce had told him, "You should tell Luce to watch her step by the way - she had a nasty fall earlier..."

Quick as a flash, Travis grabbed Marco by the throat and hoisted him into the air with one hand, holding him aloft, his eyes glowed red, "Listen up punk, I catch you so much as 'looking' at any of my 'friends' again and I will tear you limb from limb!"

Marco was struggling desperately for breath, he raised a fist and slammed it into Travis jaw as hard as he could. It was like hitting solid stone, he tried again, he felt like his knuckles might break - but Travis just laughed at him, taking the blows without flinching.

Kody watched as Travis held Marco off the ground with only one hand, and he also watched as Travis took blow after blow from Marco with no effect.

Kody hesitated, he had no idea what to do, he couldn't take Travis by himself, and probably not even with Marco's help. In the background of Travis' group he spied a familiar figure lurking around, Chris. They locked eyes for a second that seemed like minutes before Kody inally snapped out of it, "Let him go, Travis!" he said as he moved out of his seat.

Travis turned his head slightly to look around Marco towards Kody and cracked a small grin.

Travis grinned, "Sure, whatever you say!" Barely flinching his arm he hurled Marco through the air landing squarely on Kody, making the pair tumble to the floor in a heap. Chairs and tables rolling about on the floor.

Travis leered over them, "Oh Marco, I hear congratulations are in order - you made the boxing team, first fight coming up soon? Well you're going to lose it, I've got money against you - so if you don't lose the match, you lose your life - get it?"

Travis laughing turned, shaking his head and sauntered off with a cocky swagger. Most of the black clothed goons followed him smirking and chuckling.

Marco clambered off Kody, still gasping for breath... "*Cough* Sorry man... I'm sorry I got you into this mess - I feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew here..." After climbing to his feet he offered Kody a hand and pulled him to his feet, "Back to the question anyway, what do you know about half-vampires... Come to think off it what do you know about vampires full-stop?"

Kody ran a hand through his hair as he stood and brushed himself off, "Damn, I hate that bastard."

He then took a moment to think over Marco's question, "I really know much about them, only that they're a bunch of no good sons of bitches who deserve a stake through their heart."

Kody then stopped and thought or a second, "Well, to be honest any real knowledge I have of them comes from crappy old horror movies so you're guess is as good as mine. The only thing I'm sure of is that most of the 'newer' vamps can't use their full power during sunlight; unfortunatly that bastard Travis can use his."

Marco nodded, he felt in the same situation. Hopefully Miri would come up with something, "I've got someone doing some research for me on this... I don't know what she'll find though... Hey I better get a sandwich - I've got boxing practice after lunch. Wait a sec."

He left Kody standing and darted to the empty counter and bought a ham and mustard sandwich and a can of cola. Rejoining his new found ally he pulled the table back onto it's legs and sorted picked one of the toppled chairs up, then sat down.

"What do you think we should do about Travis? We can't let him turn the whole school into his minions!"

Kody shrugged, "I don't know man."

"We could try to warn them but who in their right mind would believe us?" Kody put his head in his hands and took another big bite of his sandwich. "We have to do something though, I mean we can't just hope that we'll come up with a miricale solution."

"Not to mention, we can't exactly go around and biting kids to make them werewolves..."

Kody then locked eyes with Marco, "..Or could we?"

Marco screwed his face up, "Erm, I don't know if that would be entirely ethical or practical dude... Hmmm, interesting idea though?"

He pondered the question for a moment, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, "I don't know if we'd be too popular either... Personally I haven't experienced a change yet... and I'm not looking forward to it.... I... I think my body tried to change the other night - but somehow couldn't... I felt like I'd run a marathon the next day!"

Kody had the air of a person who had been deadly serious. Marco screwed his face up again, "Listen, we could ask Miri what she's found out about converting werewolves? Maybe think about our strategy once we have a better idea of what the rules are... For now I'd like to think our primary concern was to save Kirsten, one of them - I presume Travis, has made her half vampire, she has a matter of weeks, where she either feeds and becomes a Travisette or doesn't and dies... We need a way to stop it!"

Kody shrugged again as he leaned back in his chair, "To each his own."

He then laughed to himself at Marco's comment of an attempted change, "Yea that's how it starts, your body isn't used to it, but soon you'll get the hang of it. I will warn you, hen it does happen, it might hurt a little, but if you can master control of it you can change whenever you need to, not just when your emotions get the best of you."

Taking a long gulp of his soda he then finally added, "By the way, you can count me in with trying to help you with this Kristen girl, I know if I were in your spot I'd want you to do the same."

Marco nodded, "Thanks Kody..."

He continued munching his food and pondering what had transpired that day. After chewing for a few seconds, he swallowed, "Kody, do you think I should throw the match? I mean, on the one hand I don't want to give Travis the satisfaction - but on the other hand... Well, maybe it will get him off our backs? Give us some breathing space... What do you think?"

Kody leaned back in the chair again as he pondered this question, "Every part of my body wants you to win just to shove it in that god damn vamp's smug face."

"But, I gotta admit, if you did throw the fight, it might make us look weak but it'll buy us some time. It's really up to you man, I'm not one to make other people's decisions for them."

Taking another long chug from his soda and letting out a low burp he added, "Either way, I'm with you. Something tells me that this might be the start of something big, if we can find a way to help out the ones who havn't fuly changed yet then we might be able to stop his gang from growing? Know what I mean?"

Marco nodded, "Yeah, maybe I should throw the fight - after all, theres more at stake than my ego here..."

Marco watched Kody slurping his soda and scanned the canteen, his eyes fell on the clokc and he noted that lunch break was nearly over.

"Listen man, I got boxing practice after lunch, I need to see Miri after school and I'd better go and check on Kirsten as soon as I can... When do you want to meet up next? I could introduce you to Miri - she'd sure as hell be interested to meet you I'll vouch!!

Kody shrugged as he finished his soda and crushed the can in his hand, "How about 2 or 3?" he answered.

He grabbed a napkin and jotted down an address and a phone number, "That's my apartment and my cell phone number," he explained, "If anything happens you call me or come by, it's nothing too fancy but it'll do for now I guess."

Marco took the address and studied it for a second. He knew where it was roughly - but he didn't know the area of town or what it was like. As he studied it the bell rang so he climbed out of his chair, stuffed the address in his pocket and looked seriously at Kody, "Thanks man, whatever is going down here - we're gonna sort it right?"

With a knowing look Marco headed off to the gym for another boxing lesson. Events were running through his head like wildfire, and he was fearing he had too much on his plate. He had to check on Kirsten at some point, and he had to work out whether her parents knew what was going on. He felt sure there was some benefit to introducing Miri to Kody... Meanwhile he was thinking about this damn boxing match that he didn't even know about - yet Travis did and Travis had basically ordered him to throw the fight or be killed! Things had certainly gone from bad to worse...

Not to mention of course Kody casually telling him that he was to expect excrutiating pain soon when he started to change properly...

All this was running through his mind as he sprinted to the gym. Today he was eager to get ready and start training. He'd made a subconscious decision to play the fight by ear which Travis had bet against him on. If his opponent was tougher than he was - then hell, what was the point in agonising over it?

When he eventually jogged into the gym, Coach O'Grady greeted him with an unheard of friendly-ness, "Burns! How yer feelin' kid?" The coach was beaming at him with enthusiasm and expectation.

"Uh, okay I guess coach, erm, about this fight?"

The coach grinned, "Yeah well, Bullworth want to pull the first match forwards, it's now tomorrow night - You're gonna knock him dead though son, I just know it!"

Tomorrow night!? That was just a bit too early for Marco to be comfortable with. He began putting his sparring gear on a little gingerly this time.

The coach had a few other fights going on around the mats, but he'd reserved a few fighters and the main ring for Marco. Once he was ready Marco clambered into the ring, his opponent was Felix O'Connor, about his weight and height, but light on his feet and a good boxer. As the coach rang in the first round Marco stepped forwards purposefully, getting ready to open with a few jabs when...

*** WHACK! ***

Stumbling backwards Marco held a glove to his nose, blood... His legs began to feel like jelly. Desperately he tried to bob and weave as Felix jabbed, hooked, straight punched and uppercut, he got a feel for waht was being thrown at him, threw a light jab, opened up and...

** SMASH! ***

A straight punch sent him staggering backwards across the ring, bouncing into the ropes. He pulled his hguard up while Felix piled on the pressure throwing punch after punch at his guard and driving as many as he could through the guard.

What Marco was experiencing was the familiar pain of boxing lessons, and the humiliation of having his ass handed to him. He tried to think back to what Kody had said about controlling the change, but somethign was missing, the other day he'd felt like they'd been fighting in slow motion - now he was being dominated.

The coach was of course screaming advice to him while waving his arms around in teh air and gesturing the sort of moves he wanted Marco to use. In the end it was useless, every time he opened his guard to make a move a jab or two landed square on his nose and threw him off balance. At the end of a couple of rounds he was pouring with sweat, bleeding in places but strangely not feeling any pain...

The coach came to his corner, "What the hell 'you playin' at Burns? Stop fighting like a sissy! Get in there and land some punches!"

Sissy... Marco was starting to feel angry a burning rage was developing and the world seemed to slow down slightly, he ignored the coach and stood up, seething and foaming at the mouth slightly... Across the ring he could see Felix grinning and smiling as if he was having a good time... He was going to show that punk...

STriding forwards he raised his guard, ducked the and weaved, then...

*** SLAM! ***

He staggered back a vicious uppercut having caught him square on the jaw, at this he completely lost his rag, screaming and charging forwards raining blow after blow at Felix, the shots were tearing apart Felix guard and rocking his head back with every strike but he was a good boxer, he gave ground, backed up and allowed Marco to burn some energy, then as ~Marco slowed down...

*** SMACK! ***

The blow threw him onto the mat, Felix was looking a little more exasperated this time, but Marco was exhausted, he stood up took his head guard off and approached the coach, " Sir, I just can't concentrate at the moment, I think i need a break - I maybe overdid it the other day?"

Coach O'Grady looked gravely concerned but he nodded and frowned at the same time, "Well, it's too late to change the name on the entry now - you'll have to fight... Spend the rest of the session doing bag work and shadow boxing... You did get a bit burned out the other day..."

The rest of the lesson went without incident, but he could tell the magic of the day before simply wasn't there... He could not call on it, even when he thought he could, even when he desperately needed to... He may well have had no problem losing the forthcoming fight...

Kody left the lunch room shortly after Marco did and instead of going to his next class he walked outside and sat on the school steps and pulled out a cigarette.

He put the cigarette in his mouth and fumbled through his pockets for a lighter, unfortunatly he had none on him. Just as he was about to shrug it off and go back inside he heard the click of a lighter and saw the flame infront of his cigarette, the lighter was pure black with a red drop of blood on it.

He inhaled deeply and blew the smoke out without lifting his gaze, "You're still a son-of-a-bitch."

"Good to see you too, Kody." the voice said as Kody saw a body sit down next to him. He looked over and saw the same person he had only minutes before, "So, Chris, trying to kill me in broad daylight? Getting pretty desperate huh?"

Chris laughed as he pulled out a pair of sunglasses and put them on so the sun wouldn't bother his eyes. "What are you doing here? You know that the others would kill you just for sitting with me."

Chris shrugged as he lit his own cigarette, "I dunno, I guess I'm bored and I just like giving my prey a last smoke before I take care of them."

Kody kept his eyes straight forward as he took in another breath of smoke, "Not likely, we both know you can't do shit in daylight." His gaze then turned to face Chris as his eyes glowed a sickly yellow, "Me on the other hand? I'm a whole different animal."

"Ooo," Chris mocked as he shook his hands in the air, "So scary. The only reason I'm here, you stupid fuck, is to tell you to back off. Don't be a moron and go after Travis."

"Since when did you care about me anymore? Last I checked you and your boys have tried to kill me more than a few times." Kody snapped back.

"Yea, yea, yea. Look, things are different now. Travis doesn't just kill you, he kills your family." Chris warned.

"Well," Kody said as he inhaled another breath of smoke, "I guess I'm lucky that I have no family left." Kody then got up and flicked his cigarette away, "And take off those fucking glasses," he said as he took Chris' glasses and flung them away. As he turned and walked away he heard Chris' voice over his shoulder, "You're a dead man!"

"Who said I'm still a man?" he said keeping his yellow eyes straight forward.

The rest of the afternoon passed slowly for Marco. he simply couldn't concetrate on his lessons, as he had so much else on his mind. By the end of the day he was desperate to get to Miri and find out what she knew.

Having managed to get out of classes bang on time he made a bee-line for the library and avoided crossing paths with any of the vampires. When he got there Miri was nowhere to be found, so he asked the elderly librarian, "Hey, have you seen Miri around?"

"Hmmph! As a matter of fact I have - she's been studying all afternoon! You'd do well to follow her example sonny-jim! She's in office reading some restricted books."

Marco nodded, "Erm, thanks, erm, and I will.... Or I'll try... Erm, thanks.."

The awkwardness dwelling on him he sped to the office and opened the door. Miri was sat at a huge desk, with ancient looking grimoires spread around it. She had an A4 notepad with pages and pages of neat handwriting, presumably deciphered from what looked like old english and copied from the mysterious books. She looked up at him as he approached, "Marco! Hey, it's good to see you... Man, have I been busy! I've got alot of stuff though... Want me to run through it?"

Marco looked at her pages, there was a lot of stuff, and he was conscious of the time. Soon it would be dusk and dangerous to move around... It could be mroe dangerous for Miri. He sat beside her at the big desk, "Miri, I think we should get out of here, there's an army of the undead out for my blood and I think they are watching me alot... I think we should get out of here while it's safe."

Miriam rubbed her chin thoughtfully, she was an attractive girl, a little older than Marco, she wore sensible clothes and didn't wear any make-up, but then she didn't need to - her natural beauty shone through. Her glasses added to her allure, they gave her an intelligient, sophisticated look. She pulled them off and looked at Marco sqaure in the eye, "Marco I've got most of the stuff I need copied down now, the librarian will book these back in for me... Where did you have in mind to go?"

Marco smiled, "The guy who said he was a werewolf? He wants me to meet him at his flat, he's cool though... I think he wants to help - you should meet him!"

Miri's face grew sterner, "Marco, before we do that - where is Kirsten?" Marco frowned, "She's at home... She'll be okay though?"

Miri shook her head desperately, "There's nobody else at your home right? Nobody?"

Marco scowled at her, "Nobody, except mom- but she's been out most of the ti..."

"MARCO ! WE'VE GOT TO GET TO YOUR HOUSE RIGHT NOW!"

The urgency was apparent, Miri was clearly worried, "Why what's the panic?"

"Marco, a newly created half-vampire always experiences something they call 'the craving' within twenty four hours of being turned... Your mom is in serious danger if we don't get there and restrain her...."

Marco stood up grabbed some of Miri's things and darted for the door, with Miri hot on his heels.

The sky was grey nad overcast as they raced down the highway on Marco's crosser. He took Chalmers Road but had to keep telling himself not to go too fast... Soon he skidded to a halt outside his house, with Miri chasing after him. The car wasn't there - maybe his mom didn't come home?

Gingerly he entered the silent house, Miri allowed the door to slam shut after her, the crash echo'ing through the house... As they stepped over the creaking boards an unearthly voice creaked from upstairs, "Marco... I'm soooo.... hungry.... I have to eat... I HAVE TO EAT!" The last phrase was a low growl and from the second storey a ghostly grey looking Kirsten drifted down the stairs. Her eyes were blood red and her canines and incisors had morphed into sharp fang-like teeth. She went straight for Marco's neck, wrestling him to the ground, he put his hands up in defence and tried desperately to hold her off. He could feel her warm breath on his neck and almost feel the sharp edges of her fangs just whiskering past his jugular, he cried out as loud as he could, "MIRI!" then...

*** WHACK! *** Miri had grabbed a freestanding coat stand and slammed it into her head. Knocking her off him and sending her unconscious.

Marco pushed her off and breathed a sigh of relief, "Good work... What now though? We can't leave her like this?"

Miri rubbed her chin thoughtfully, "Do you have some rope?"

Marco laughed, "Hah! I can see what you're thinking... Dad might have some in the cellar - I'm not allowed down there... Still desperate times eh? You watch her!"

Opening the door under the stairs Marco wandered into the forbidden world of his parents cellar. He wasn't sure why they kept him out, he looked around and there was just normal stuff, a few boxes, a washing machine, some junk from years ago... A strange door leading into a another room...

Slowly he approached and tried the door, it was locked securely. Rationing that there was no rope anywhere else he scanned the room for a key hanging up. He was about to give up, when he spotted a small key ledged on a brick near the corner, in the shadows. He rushed over grabbed it and unlocked the door, then pushed it open. What he saw left him utterly stunned.

There behind the door was steel cage, built into the concrete with a door and padlock on the front. Inside were thick iron shackles and an iron collar, chained to the floor of the cave... Were hsi parents heavily into bondage? What the hell did it mean? He ran back up stairs and helped Miri drag the unconscious Kirsten's form into the cellar. AFter they'd secured her in the schackles and manocles and locked the cage they put a big bottle of water in the cage and locked the door, keeping the key with them. They looked at each other, there eyes met, and Miri spoke first...

"Marco, you don't even need to say it - anyway I've a theory about that... Erm, stuff... You've never been bitten by a strange savage dog have you?"

Marco shrugged, "Nah... I think my grandad took a nasty bite - I saw his scar, it never healed properly."

Miri was nodding in understanding, "Marco, I think you're parents are werewolves too, maybe both definately one... But they couldn't control it... If you ARE then you NEED to learn to control it! Kirsten will be okay for now, You should maybe leave a note for your mom?"

Marco's cellphone beeped at that exact point, he pulled it out of his pocket and read the message he had been left, "Marco it's your mom, gone to find your pa - I'll be back in a few days with or without him. I'll explain everything then."

Marco showed the tiny brightly lit screen to Miri. She shrugged and flicked her brown bob back over her shoulder, "Tell her the truth Marco..."

Marco began texting back;

I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON MA. I AM A WW TOO I THINK! HAVE A HALF VAMPIRE LOCKED IN THE CELLAR - PLEASE DON'T DO ANYTHING WITH HER - i'M TRYING TO HELP HER. SEE YOU SOON, PS IT MIGHT BE BETTER IF YOU STAYED AWAY FOR A WHILE. HAVING MYTHER WITH THE LOCAL VAMPIRE GROUP.

He clicked send, not really believing what he'd put... "Come on, let's get to Kody's!"

Soon they were out the house, speeding towards Kody's flat, loaded up with Miri's notes and racing against the dusk. Marco's mom didn't reply that night.

The black Charger rumbled down the street and rolled up the small driveway and into the small garage. Kody turned the car off and stepped out surveying the scene, it was getting dark and he needed to check his "defenses."

He walked to a small spot behind the garage and unlocked a large metal box, insed was a small generator, it was still working which was good. Long ago, Kody had realized that the night could be his worst enemy. This generator was hooked up to two flood lights that at a moments notice could illuminate the area around his small flat and ward off or simply show where a vampire was hiding.

He then turned around to walk into his flat when a cool breeze washed over him which caused him to stop. "You shouldn't be here, you little bastard."

A voice came from behind him, "You better stay out of other people's buisness!"

Kody laughed which echoed through the small backyard, "Listen up, you little pissant, you don't even know who I am do you?"

The young kid began to stammer and then his eyes turned red and his teeth began to grow, "You're fresh meat! Travis will be proud of what I've done when I'm through with you."

Kody laughed again much to the young vampire's confusion, "I's a shame they never warn you fuckers about me."

The young vampire gave a look of confusion before it turned into pure terror, Kody's eyes turned yellow and black fur began to sprout from his body. He yelled as his body changed and his yell even changed into a howl; the young vampire now stood looking at a 6'7" black furred werewolf baring it's teeth at him.

The vampire tried to use his developing speed to get away but Kody was already upon him. His claws were like blurs of black moving against the night, the screams of the vampire were drowned out by Kody's howling as he enjoyed in the kill. The vampire was dead within a minute of the inital attack and Kody stood over his foe, blood soaked.

He heard a engine that he recognized as a motorcycle coming up the driveway so he turned back towards the sound and saw Marco and a attractive girl coming towards him. His body slowly shrank back to normal size and the fur dropped off as Kody returned to human form. "Sorry about that," he said wiping blood away from his face, "they tend to send in the newer 'vamps' every so often. On the bright side it gives me a little pracitce now and again."

Marco leaned his bike against the wall and screwed his face up, "Jesus... Aren't you gonna have to do something with the body?"

Miri interrupted him sharply, "Nope, not if it was a full vampire - watch..."

Sure enough the fresh looking corpse had already started to wither, the blood was turning to a grey ash-like substance. After five minutes there was simply an ashen skeleton and a pile of blackish grey dust, rapidly blowing away in the wind.

Marco shuddered as the remnants of the skull started to crumble, "Man... Erm, Miri, this is Kody - Kody this is Miri... Erm, should we get inside?"

Miri offered a dainty hand to Kody and shook it when he offered his, "Erm, you've er, still got a little blood..." As she spoke she smiled and indicated the corners of her own mouth.
